Find Grounding

By Kaitlyn Lewis, LPC

As the air gets cooler and the days start to shorten, life naturally shifts from the carefree pace of summer into the routines of fall. I often notice myself craving a little steadiness during this transition. The fall can bring fresh starts, whether that looks like the beginning of a new school year, changes at work, or simply adjusting to the season itself. It can feel exciting and refreshing, but also a bit overwhelming. Between settling into new schedules, preparing for the holidays, and the pressure to make the most of the season, it is easy to feel stretched thin.

So how do we find grounding in the midst of transition? How do we hold space for both the beauty and the busyness of fall? For me, I return to the practice of mindful living, which emphasizes awareness, intentionality, gratitude, and sustainability.

Awareness

Awareness is about noticing. In the fall, I find myself drawn to the small moments: the crunch of leaves underfoot, the warmth of a mug or blanket, the golden light in the early evening. Awareness is also about self-awareness, tuning into how my body and mind are responding to change. Am I rushing through my days, or am I allowing myself to be present? Awareness invites us to pause, take a breath, and truly notice both our inner and outer worlds.

Intentionality

With the shift into busier routines, intentionality becomes even more important. Without it, it is easy to get swept up in the momentum of to-do lists and obligations. Intentionality helps me ask: What do I want this season to feel like? For some, it may mean slowing down to savor cozy evenings at home. For others, it may be about carving out time for connection or creativity. Intentionality allows us to shape our days in ways that feel nourishing and supportive.

Gratitude

Autumn naturally invites a spirit of gratitude. It’s a time when many holidays focus on thankfulness, and a reminder that change is part of life’s cycle. Gratitude does not have to be grand and can be as simple as noticing something simple or jotting down three things that brought you joy today. Gratitude grounds us, softens the stress of busyness, and draws us back into the present.

Sustainability

The fall season often tempts us to overextend ourselves, saying yes to new projects, joining every activity, or filling our calendars too quickly. Sustainability reminds us to honor our limits and hold our boundaries. Just like trees shed their leaves to prepare for winter, we can also let go of what is no longer serving us. Practicing sustainability means asking: What pace is realistic for me right now? and What practices will support my mind and body through this season?

Mindful living in the fall is not about perfection. It is about weaving awareness, intentionality, gratitude, and sustainability into our daily lives in ways that feel supportive and kind. As we move through this season of transition, may we allow ourselves moments of pause, presence, and care.

Whether your fall is filled with new beginnings, cherished traditions, or quiet evenings, I hope you find ways to ground yourself in what matters most.
