October is full of masks and costumes, a fun reminder that sometimes we hide parts of ourselves. We might smile when we are stressed, say we are fine when we are not, or ignore feelings that feel uncomfortable. Hiding emotions can be a coping tool, but it can also make us feel disconnected.
The first step is noticing when you mask your feelings. Do you laugh when anxious, stay quiet when frustrated, or push away sadness? Awareness is not judgment, it is understanding.
Creating safe spaces helps reduce the need to hide. Trusted friends, family, or support groups are places where you can share honestly. Journaling or talking with a virtual therapist can be another safe space to explore feelings and practice vulnerability.
Masking comes from care, but self-compassion allows you to meet emotions with kindness. Feeling what you feel is a form of strength. October is a perfect month to notice the masks, practice honesty, and celebrate moments of authenticity.
