EMDR therapy in Texas:
helping your nervous system finally finish processing what it's been holding onto.
Some things don't go away just because time passes. EMDR was built for exactly this.

The past keeps showing up in the present.
You might be years, even decades, out from something that happened, and yet it can still feel close. A smell, a tone of voice, a situation that echoes the past, and suddenly your body is back there even when your mind knows you're safe. You struggle to explain it because it doesn't always make rational sense.
That's not irrational. It's neurological. Traumatic memories are stored differently from regular memories: they remain active, complete with the emotions and physical sensations of the original experience, until they're properly processed. Time alone doesn't do that processing. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) does.
The result of successful processing isn't that the memory disappears. It's that it loses its grip. You can think about what happened without being pulled back into it.
EMDR doesn't erase the past. It changes how it lives in you.
At Heard Counseling, EMDR is offered by trained clinicians who work carefully and collaboratively to create a sense of safety before any processing begins. The goal is always to reduce the distress associated with painful memories so they stop interfering with your daily life, your relationships, and your ability to feel okay in the present.
We move at your pace. Every step is explained. You are always in control of what happens in session.
EMDR is especially effective for:
✓ PTSD & complex trauma
✓ Accident or medical trauma
✓ Childhood & relational trauma
✓ Survivors of abuse or neglect
✓ Grief & loss
✓ First responder & military trauma
✓ Anxiety & panic rooted in past experiences
✓ Intrusive thoughts & flashbacks
✓ Phobias
How EMDR works at Heard Counseling.
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase protocol: history taking, preparation, assessment, desensitization, installation, body scan, closure, and re-evaluation. We work through each phase deliberately, with constant attention to your sense of safety and readiness. We never begin processing before the preparation phase has built adequate internal resources.
Our EMDR-trained clinicians integrate the approach thoughtfully with other modalities based on your needs. For complex or developmental trauma, we use modified pacing and specialized adaptations. Resource Development and Installation (RDI) helps build positive neural networks alongside the processing work. Safety, pace, and your sense of control are always our first priority.
Getting started doesn't have to be complicated.

Frequently Asked Questions about EMDR Therapy
What does EMDR actually feel like?
1
EMDR involves brief sets of bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, taps, or sounds) while you hold a memory or image in mind. Most people find it surprisingly manageable, not nearly as overwhelming as they expected. Your therapist checks in throughout and always adjusts the pace based on how you're doing.
Can EMDR be done virtually?
2
Yes. Virtual EMDR is well-established and effective. Your therapist uses adapted techniques that work through a screen, and many clients find that processing from their own space is actually more comfortable.
How long does EMDR take?
3
It depends on the complexity of what you're processing. Specific single-incident traumas can sometimes be addressed in a handful of sessions. Complex or developmental trauma takes longer. We always discuss realistic expectations at the outset and track progress together.
EMDR can help with:
✓ Trauma and PTSD, including complex and childhood trauma
✓ Grief and loss that hasn't fully processed
✓ Anxiety and panic rooted in past experiences
✓ Intrusive thoughts and memories
✓ Phobias and fear responses
✓ Body-level reactions that don't respond to talk therapy alone
